Artist in Residence: Presenting Eytan Messiah

Following a successful residency in 2022, Raes alongside Maison Perrier-Jouët are thrilled to announce the return of Sydney-based ceramist, Eytan Messiah – our 2024 Artist in Residence.

Established in 2019, Raes Artist In Residence programme was designed in collaboration with Perrier- Jouët with a like-minded vision to support local and international creatives.

With a continued appreciation of art and tastemakers, each year Raes’ hand selects an artist of a different medium to stay and create a collection of pieces inspired by the hotel and home.

My residency at Raes on Wategos has been a deeply immersive experience. Glazed ceramic tiles have adorned our human history for thousands of years and I am always keen for my work to centre around these valuable traditions. The beauty and history of the Wategos area as well as the hotel itself have been a rich palette to draw from. My handcrafted tiles and ceramic mural look to celebrate these elements and add to the story of Raes on Wategos.” – Eytan Messiah

After his previous residency on property, using Raes as both his studio and home, Eytan has returned to revitalise the hotel’s private pool, creating handcrafted tiles and a ceramic mural inspired by the unique architecture of the hotel, the historic legacy of Wategos and its sense of place.

Embracing traditional tile-making techniques, this year’s body of work pays homage to the hotel’s original design while telling a story of cultural heritage, serving as an artistic bridge between past and present.

At the heart of Eytan’s design lies a dedication to artisanal craftsmanship, showcasing the significance of handcrafted tiles in the modern era of mass production.

The exclusive collection of works is now available for preview, with a limited-run of tiles available to purchase at the hotel or via our e-store.
